For many, choosing to move into assisted living can be a completely new phase in your life. This can be overwhelming especially if you are downsizing or moving away from family.
Here at Veranda Club, we know that this time can be stressful for our residents which is why we have compiled a simple checklist for those who are planning to move into an assisted living community.
How much home furnishings you will need or should bring will depend on the different floorplan of your apartment choice as well as your lifestyle needs. For basics, you should bring your bedding you prefer, keepsakes, framed artwork, photos, and other knick-knacks to make your new apartment feel home-like for you.
If you have enough space, you can also bring along sofas, chairs, kitchenware, or other furnishings that can help create a cozier living space.
It is important to ensure that everything you need is on hand when you move in. This means having easy access to your assistive devices, like hearing aids, walkers/canes, and eyeglasses, and their relevant accessories. On top of this, if you need any appliances that are not provided, such as coffeemakers or a mini-fridge, it is also important to bring those in with you as well.
It can be tempting to bring you entire wardrobe with you, and that is fine! However, it is important to declutter and take a look at whether or not your clothes serve your needs. For example, it is important to have clothing that is suitable for the climate and weather type that you will be living in and also to have formal outfits if special occasions take place. On top of this, have your regular comfortable clothing, pyjamas, and preferred footwear.
Before you start to go on a full shopping spree, most assisted living communities will provide a list of amenities. Figure out what the community is able to offer before you stock up on toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoos, and soaps.
What is crucial is that you have a list of the prescriptions and over-the-counter medications that you need to take as well as a comprehensive breakdown of the dosages. Having these in clearly labelled bags is essential for continuity when you move in.
